The Time Machine Characters

Background:
Sister Catherine has lived almost all of her life in the nunnery. She was dropped off at the nunnery in a basket. She was not wrapped up like other babies but was laid on an old towel with a pillow case placed over her little shivering, wet and bloody body. She was so cold and frightened, Catherine could barely cry when one of the sisters who was checking the doors of the chapel that stormy night.
The infant was rejected by all who saw her for she had green eyes and bright red hair which were considered ‘witchy traits’. The sister who found Catherine was named Sister Ava and she did not believe in such superstitious ways. She protected her and gave her a name at the age of 2 weeks. Sister Ava believed that the baby was destined to become a ‘great person’.
As Catherine grew up and was rejected so many times over, Sister Ava was the one that consoled the child. Sister Ava made sure that when Catherine was 9 and the oldest child of the orphanage, that she received a doll on her birthday which was more important to her than having a set of parents.
During Catherine’s late teen years, Sister Ava became ill from time to time, Catherine was by then an initiate. When she was told that there were others who could look after Sister Ava’s needs, Catherine simply spoke with conviction that she wanted to repay Sister Ava for all of the care she gave her as well as learning her skills of calligraphy from Sister Ava.
The old Mother was appreciative to learn that Catherine wanted to do the painstaking working of calligraphy. Not many wanted that position and were normally done as a penance.
Mother died a few days before Sister Ava. A great celebration of the Mother’s life was given but Sister Ava didn’t receive any more than a short prayer service. Several older sisters were in consideration for being the next Mother and one was not fond of having Sister Catherine around at all. She had fought tooth and nail against any that Catherine had tried to do.
Sister Catherine knew that there would a general housekeeping and she would be out on her own with nothing. She packed her belongings as soon as Sister Ava was laid to rest. She then secreted two satchels of personal belongings as well as a few of Sister Ava’s. She went to the chapel to be in seclusion. After a few hours of tearful reflection, Sister Catherine came to a final conclusion. She would leave the chapel to go out in the world to find her own place in the world.


Meeting of The Father

As I knelt there in the cubicle for penance and thought, I was asked if I was ready to leave the nunnery. I was certainly surprised at male voice for it was the not common to hear a male in the nunnery's chapel.

"Who are you?" I had asked.
"Just a brother. Father wishes to speak to you before you leave. Would you accompany me to Father's office, please?" the male asked.

"Yes." was my answer. I stood up and picked up my carpet bags or satchel if that is what one is to call them and looked to see that a thin door was open.
One of the panels was actually a door to another room much to my surprise.

I followed the hooded monk through twisted paths that were narrow until I was led to a solid door that was as plain as......nothing! Not one scratch was on the door nor was the door large. Only a rope was at the side of the door and a bell next to it.

The monk rang the bell and stood off to one side respectfully.
The door opened and I walked inside. The room was lined with books of all sizes in groups. A center table was in the room. It was well polished and round. Chairs were sat around the table at even spacing, each like the ones next to it. A monk with tall stature and authority was standing off to one side. he nodded and the young hooded figure left quietly.

"The Mother passed away as did her twin. A grand send off was given for the Mother but not one thought was given to the twin except for your presence. She was your mentor, wasn't she?" he spoke.

"Yes, Father." I was able to say.

"She protected you throughout your life and you repaid her kindness and devotion with your own kindness and devoted in her years of need.
Very commendable, I must say. That is how life is to be.

Sister Agnes was your strict teacher and she taught you well. But you are bitter enemies, not of your own fault but because of your own beauty and youth. She was once Sister Ava's best friend but you came. Sister Agnes felt pushed off to one side because a baby takes a lot of time.

Now that Sister Agnes has shown interest in being The Mother, you feel the need to leave the Nunnery, correct?" Father asked as he stood there with his hands in the sleeves of his cloak.

"Yes, Father. Or she will have me doing penance for the rest of my life or worse exiled from the Nunnery." I spoke rather honestly.

"I do believe that you are correct. Therefore I am sending you on a Pilgrimage. You will find the details in your new wagon. You will spend the next week in learning how to handle your horses, care for them and other things that you will need to do on the trip. I have taken the liberty of rescuing the rest of your belongings and speaking to Sister Agnes.

Of course she is not thrilled about you leaving for your Pilgrimage but there is not one thing she can do about it. She will not bother you either.

I have sent a few messenger birds to your wagon so that you may send me messages until you have learned how to operate this Pilgrimage Traveler's Companion Book.I have the matching Book. You will find all that you need in your new traveling home.

I bid you Peace, Happiness and Safe Journey, my Daughter of the Cloth." The Father spoke as he slowly held out his hand for me to kiss.

I meekly kissed his hand and found that I had a ring placed on my left forefinger. I look up to The Father.

"It is a ring that signifies that you are on your own Pilgrimage and perhaps you will be received with honor and respect. Go my Daughter of the Cloth." he spoke softly.

"Thank you Father. I shall do my best to fulfill my Pilgrimage." I spoke to The Father. He walked me to the door and rang the bell.

"As your Father in the Cloth, I shall give you a kiss of Peace and Love." he spoke softly and kissed my forehead.
"Go now my Daughter of the Cloth and meet your destiny." he spoke as the door slowly opened.

I worked hard and long to prepare for my journey. The two young monks were patient with me and taught me all that I needed to know for my journey as far as how to care for my animals, finding food and other things of the camping nature.

I left with very little fan fare. I was loaded up with many staples and smoked meats as well as mead and ale. It was crowded in my wagon but I was well supplied for my journey.

Xica is a young magic user who wishes to be allowed to pursue her only love- magic. Her brand of magic deals with the elements, Auras and with plants. She has a great many books written in a archaic language which she was taught long ago by her grandmother who raised her from the time she was 5.

Her personality is gentle and quiet. She tends to keep to herself and prefers not to speak of any money matters as long as she is kept supplied with what she needs. She enjoys needlework and reading if not working with her plants. She is not easy to befriend but if she was to be your friend, she would be loyal to you.

As a future mate, she would require very little 'maintenance' and prefers to have just 1 or 2 maids to help keep her room clean and neat. She has no desire for ornate jewels and has some jewelry of her own. Clothing is used for comfort and a slight beauty appeal. Some items however, she does not wear out in public. These items are embedded with runes and are made by her own hands.

She knows very little of political issues and does not have any desires to dawdle in such affairs.
As far as dancing and other court activities, she knows enough to get by. Which means she would do some light flirting but makes no promises or be lead into inappropriate corners. She is able to faint with ease and grace if she needs to or if the situation seems to become out of hand for some reason, she will turn into a mist as she faints.

Profession: Her main profession is Herbalest but her hidden one is still... well, hidden!
Personality:
Glorethra is very independent and a hermitess. She does have good manners most of the time but sometimes her temper gets in her way. She also hates waiting on people who are late for no reason. She does her work well and she is very private about her profession. Not many people know who she is or her profession. She does her work in secret and leaves it on a door step if she finds a payment there.

Likes: Chocolate, jewels, fine clothes, books, privacy
Dislikes: Rudeness, overly talkative people or those who pry into other people's business
